Torsten Herrmann was born in 1981 in Jülich, Germany. He studied composition with Hanspeter Kyburz and electronic music with Wolfgang Heiniger at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule Berlin. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he studied composition with Frédéric Durieux, electronic music with Yan Maresz, and orchestration with Marc André Dalbavie. He also completed the one year Cursus program for electronic music at the Ircam (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) in Paris. Since 2018, he is a lecturer in orchestration and music analysis at the Hanns-Eisler Hochschule Berlin. Torsten Herrmann received numerous prizes and awards for his works. Among others, he was the winner of the Tactus Composer's Forum with the Brussels Philharmonic, a finalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, and a recipient of the Hanns-Eisler Prize in Berlin, as well as the First Prize of the Freestyle Competition in London. In addition, he was awarded at the Orchestra Workshop with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 2016-2017, he held a residency grant at the Villa Massimo in Rome. He also received fellowships and residencies from the Cité des Arts in Paris, the Künstlerdorf Schöppingen, and the Künstlerhof Schreyahn. Further grants were awarded by the Deutsche Bank Foundation's “Academy Opera Today” program, the Richard Wagner Foundation, and the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes). His works have been performed by ensembles and orchestras such as Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Brussels Philharmonic, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Interface, Ensemble UnitedBerlin, Ensemble E-Mex, and the Zafraan Ensemble.
