An undisputed figure on the viola in France and around the world, Gérard Caussé has developed, alongside his solo career in recital and as a concert artist with the greatest conductors and the most prestigious ensembles, a chamber music activity that is unanimously recognized for the musical generosity of a man who, since Mozart, has considered himself a “ferryman” between the low and high voices of the string quartet.
A sought-after partner to the greatest, including Gidon Kremer, Dimitry Sitkovetsky, Mischa Maisky, Michel Portal, Paul Meyer, François-René Duchâble, Renaud Capuçon, Franck Braley and Nicholas Angelich, Gérard Caussé's unique style and aura have influenced several generations of musicians who have become violists.
His commitment to contemporary repertoire, right from the founding of the Ensemble Intercontemporain, where Pierre Boulez appointed him principal viola, is accompanied by a recognized innovative teaching activity, from the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris to the Escuela Reina Sofia in Madrid, as well as in numerous masterclasses in Verbier, Salzburg, Siena, Villecroze, Lisbon, Havana and Caracas.
From 2002 to 2004, Gérard Caussé was artistic director of the Toulouse National Chamber Orchestra and appeared with it as conductor and soloist. Recently he played with Orchestre National de France, Radio France Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lille (Casadesus), Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, Montpellier Philharmonic (Levi), Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Luxembourg Philharmonic (Krivine) and Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra.
Gérard Caussé plays a Gasparo da Salo (1560).
His discography is composed of more than 35 records on labels including Schubert’s Trout Quintet for Virgin Classics, a recital disc with Levinas and Hindemith works for Aeon, Bloch’s works for viola and orchestra with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and a recital disc of Russian repertoire with Maria Joao Pires for Deutsche Grammophon.
